In 1766, the Duchy of Lorraine was annexed to France, and the castle continuously housed prestigious cavalry regiments until the early 20th century. Currently undergoing restoration following the devastating fire of January 2, 2003, the castle is now open to the public and offers activities and events as part of its cultural and tourism development plan.

Construction of the Château des Lumières in Lunéville began in 1702 and was completed in 1723.
